NANOHANA TSUMAMI KANZASHI HAIR ORNAMENT

The fashion for wearing elaborate flower ornaments made of silk to celebrate the changing seasons developed in Japan in the Edo period (1603-1867); a different flower is chosen for each month, such plum blossoms in February, cherry in April, wisteria or iris in May. Nanohana is a yellow flower that permeates the Japanese landscape in early Spring, appreciated for its simplicity and bright warm feeling after the cold of winter, before the cherry blossoms open.

The art of creating Tsumami Kanzashi is a Japanese National Designated Traditional Handicraft, carried on by skillful artisans with profound understandings of Japanese culture, history, the beauty of Japanese seasons and nature, and the responsibility of carrying this art for the future generations. This piece was created by Kuniko Kanawa, who trained intensively with designated master Kazuyo Hozumi, one of only five acknowledged master Tsumami Kanzashi artisans in Japan.
