Character of Characters: An Animation by Xu Bingasian artmuseum store
The Character of Characters was artist Xu Bing's first animation. Created from thousands of hand-drawn sketches, the video depicts the roots of Chinese writing in nature and its role in education, spirituality, government ... even the way that calligraphy shapes Chinese traffic patterns.
Commissioned by the Asian Art Museum, this catalogue offers a penetrating, often wry analysis of Chinese culture through calligraphy. This book features essays by Britta Erickson, a leading expert on Chinese contemporary art, and by the artist, as well as a version of the animation on DVD.
Out of Character was on view at the Asian Art Museum from Oct. 5, 2012 through Jan. 13, 2013.
