Japan's Takazawa Candle has been making plant-based candles from sumac, rice bran, and rapeseed flower oil since 1892. They are the only remaining candle maker in Nanao, Ishikawa Prefecture, following this traditional method of candle-making, using sumac wax from the Kyushu region and Japanese washi paper from Shimane Prefecture for wicks. Each candle is made by hand, one at a time, to ensure the highest quality. The flames of Takazawa's candles, symbolic of ancestral wisdom, are bigger and brighter than those of other makers due to the special wick made from a unique recipe dating back to the 16th century.

Kome-no-megumi means 'the blessing of rice'. Rice has been the staple food of Japan since antiquity. These are made from rice bran wax and its original color. Each candle takes 30 mins to burn so they can be used as timers for coffee/tea break, bed and bathing time.
